האי דספשן (Deception Island), אנטארקטיקה
האי דספשן הוא יעד הררי בצורת פרסה
הנמצא ליד חופי אנטארקטיקה באיי שטלנד הדרומיים. באי דספשן יש הר געש פעיל ושמונה
סוגי עופות ים מקננים – גן עדן לחובבי חיות בר. נמצאת בו קבוצת הפינגווינים
הגדולה ביותר בחצי האי האנטארקטי ואולי אף בעולם. השטים בקרוז יוכלו לראות מקרוב
עשרות אלפי פינגווינים מסוג רצועת-הסנטר מקננים וקופצים לשכשך במים הקפואים.
אי הפיל (Elephant Island), אנטארקטיקה
אי הפיל ליד חופי אנטארקטיקה נקרא על
שם פילי הים המתגוררים בו ובשל צורת האי, הדומה לראש של פיל. ההרים הסלעיים, משטחי
הקרח המבהיקים וחיות הבר המיוחדות, מוסיפים להילת המסתורין של היעד המרוחק הזה.
הנופים המרהיבים שבהם לצד פילי ים ענקיים ומאות אלפי פינגווינים. לצד הנופים היפים
ניתן למצוא המוני פינגווינים חגיגיים מהלכים על פני השטח הסלעי ופילי ים ענקיים
נחים על החוף.

כמה
עובדות מעניינות על יבשת אנטארקטיקה
אנטרקטיקה היא היבשת הקרה והשוממת בעולם. זהו אזור הספר
האמיתי האחרון: אין בה יישובי קבע, כבישי אספלט לא חורצים את אדמתה, ושטחה לא נמצא
בבעלותה של אף מדינה. זוהי ממלכתו הבלעדית של הטבע, בתנאים הקיצוניים ביותר שתוכלו
לדמיין על פני אדמת כדור הארץ.
שטחה של אנטארקטיקה הוא 14 מיליון קמ"ר, כמעט
כגודלה של יבשת דרום אמריקה.
זו היבשת היחידה שמגלי ים הניחו שקיימת עוד לפני
שהתגלתה: אם בצפון יש יבשה, אז גם בדרום צריכה להיות כזו, כדי שהעולם לא
"ייפול" על צדו - כך חשבו חכמי העולם העתיק. הם כינו אותה "טרה
אוסטרליס אינקוגניטה", כלומר "היבשת הדרומית הלא ידועה".
החורף נמשך בחודשים אפריל עד ספטמבר, ובמהלכו שוררת עלטה
והטמפרטורות מגיעות למינוס 90 מעלות. וחודשי הקיץ מאוקטובר עד מרץ.
למרות שאנטארקטיקה מכוסה קרח, היא אחת המדבריות הגדולים

יורדים בה גשמים ושלג עז.
95% מהיבשת מכוסים בקרח, המגיע במקומות מסוימים לעובי של
עד 4 ק"מ!
הראשון שהגיע לקוטב הדרומי היה רואלד
אמונדסן הנורבגי (14.12.1911), וכחודש אחריו הגיע רוברט
סקוט האנגלי (17.1.1912), שלא הצליח לחזור, מאחר והוא ואנשיו קפאו למוות בסופה
משתוללת.
באנטארקטיקה חיים רק מדענים ומבקרים מזדמנים שמתגוררים
בתחנות מחקר של המדינות השונות. בתחנת אמונדסן-סקוט (Amundsen–Scott), על שמם של שני המגלים, שוהים כ- 240 איש.
אמנת אנטארקטיקה נחתמה ב- 1959, במטרה לדאוג שהיבשת תשמש
אך ורק למטרות מחקר ושלום.
